I am taking vacation week to post on Leadership Help some of my own writings . I always considered myself a reflective principal. I also learned over the years how important it was to let the school community know what I was thinking. Here is a message I read over the P.A. the morning after the Columbine School Shootings. more »

NEW BEDFORD -- The same realization strikes Kevin Sullivan at the Phillips Avenue School and Cynthia Trinidad at the G.H. Dunbar School: An elementary school principal's work is never done.
Editor's note: As part of an occasional series, The Standard-Times is chronicling the experiences of Kevin Sullivan and Cynthia Trinidad, two first-time school principals, during the 2005-06 academic year. more » Thursday, December 22

Now, more than a year after Shimon Waronker became principal, M.S. 22 has fewer fights in the hallways; test scores have risen; and most students come to school wearing their new uniform of khakis and white shirts. But at J.H.S. 8, the principal, Adrienne Lloyd, was transferred to a different school last February after tensions with teachers grew so serious that the teachers' union gave her a symbolic "shame award." more »

In terms of school leadership, the whole leader refers certainly to instructional, managerial, and organizational acumen. In its 2000 report, “Reinventing the Principalship,” IEL wrote that “ …schools of the 21st century will require a new kind of principal, one whose role will be defined in terms of instructional, community, and visionary leadership.” Today, we expand that definition to one that makes clear and emphasizes the importance and impact of personal attributes such as integrity, ethics, moral courage, and personal strength. more »

In today’s frenetic education environment, there’s virtually unanimous agreement that Leadership Matters. Jonathan Kozol said that the principal is the heart and soul of every public school in America. I firmly believe that school improvement and student success begins and ends with principals. Every school needs and deserves a highly qualified leader. Unfortunately, the current state of school leadership is worrisome. more »

Salandy lived in a low-income part of Alexandria. Only one parent was at home. But there was a spark in Salandy, a yearning for something better that Walsh could recognize in his tone of voice, his choice of friends, his promising grades. Walsh was principal of the Minnie Howard School, one of the few schools in the country that has only ninth-graders, and she had made it a rule that her students would all get very personal attention. more »

In In Search of Excellence, Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, Jr., introduced a management technique called MBWA, an acronym for "managing by wandering around" or "managing by walking about." It's a style that is the ideal description of many of the best principals' leadership styles. Those principals spend a great deal of time "walking about," working with and observing teachers and students.see whole article-Pawlas on Principals more »

Choose the word or set of words that, when inserted in the sentence, best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.
Harold, far from being a ------- , was not ------- to take a person holding opposing political views into his household.
But every school is redeemable so long as it enjoys strong leadership, talented teachers, adequate funding, and enough hours in the day to make up for deficiencies in the home. And federal stimulus funds for education are available to those states willing to prove it. Boston Globe Editorial B IS CORECT!Right-o! Explanation Only “bigot . . . loath” logically completes the sentence. Someone who is not bigoted, or prejudiced, would not be “loath,” or unwilling, to accept someone with different opinions.
